How did this happen?
This is my new Selfie, #PENFIE
As most of you know, I’ve been using Olympus OMD EM-5 for almost a year already. To date, I have no complains using it except that I am under-utilising it. I am still having green fingers (still very fresh) with the camera, as I am not very knowledgeable on the technical side of a camera, except switch “ON”, “Aim and Focus”, and Click the “Shutter”. However, I did learn more than a handful tricks during the Photowalk with Robin Wong organised by Olympus Malaysia some time in April this year.
I am glad that I have invested in an Olympus system because I personally feel that my photography skill has improved a lot and the pictures taken were getting better and better ever since I started using OMD. #shioksendiri
Here’s the thing, when you have something good in hand, you always want something better. I wish my OMD EM-5 has a built-in WiFi (EM-1 has built-in WiFi but I couldn’t afford it), so that I can immediately share the pictures online. At the moment, I am transferring pictures to my phone using a card reader for Android phone (USB OTG). It’s quite a hassle as I need to take out the memory card, slot into the card reader and then attached to my phone. It’s time consuming especially when my phone hangs or lags (so much lately) and especially when I have limited space to save the pictures into my phone.( T___T ) Apart from that, I wish the screen could flip 180 degrees, so that I can take a better shot of
myself everyone with me in it, without leaving anyone out of the frame.
Thanks to the kind, generous and friendly people in Olympus, I get to loan a black unit of Olympus PEN Lite E-PL7 for 2 weeks. I have been busy for the past few weeks as I got caught up with work and traveling, so, here’s a quick review about the the E-PL7. A proper and more detailed post coming up as soon as I get my hands on the Silver colour E-PL7 which is more retro looking.
Here’s an overview specification of Olympus E-PL 7:
- 16 megapixels
- Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm) CMOS Sensor
- TruePic VII image processor
- ISO 200 – 25600
- 3 Axis Image Stabilization
- 81 Number of focus points
- 3″ Tilting LCD screen with 1,037,000 Screen dots
- 8.0 fps burst
- 1920 x 1080 (30p), 1280 x 720 (30p), 640 x 480 (30 fps) video recording
- Built-In Wi-Fi
- BLS-50 lithium-ion battery
- 115 x 67 x 38 mm
The E-PL7 is the latest PEN and currently selling at RM2,399 with M.ZUIKO 14-42mm EZ. It is my current favourite everyday camera. It’s so much lighter than the OMD and not as bulky. I’m not abandoning my OMD, just exploring the new PEN Lite which is equipped with new features that are specialised for selfies and making selfies easy – #PENfie.
I like how selfie mode launches automatically when the monitor is rotated downward, which then turned into mirror display. Best of all, it comes with touch selfie monitor! No need to press the camera shutter, you could also press the shutter on the screen, which has 1 second delay shot. Press, 1 second, snap.
I must say, this new feature provided a much more comfortable and fun shooting experience. Photos with interchangeable lens camera quality can be transferred to smartphones on the spot using the built-in Wi-Fi. Spamming the social media platform with #banyakgaya pictures.
You would have noticed my recent pictures shared on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter were so much sharper, vibrant and lots of hashtags such as #olympusPENgeneration #olympusMY #olympusPen #EPL7. Yea, these pictures were taken and shared via Olympus E-PL7 to my mobile.
Here are some #Penfies taken over the week and I only resized and watermark the pictures. No color editing/adjustments.
As an Olympus OMD EM-5 user and now the EPL7, the obvious comparison can be seen and felt is the weight, grip and size. While E-PL7 is more favourited on the weight and size, I still prefer the firmer grip on OMD EM-5. Perhaps, because I’m used to helding the OMD EM-5. Also, I love how the shutter sounds on E-PL7.
Apart from that, I love the quick and easy image sharing between E-PL7 and my smartphone making sharing so much easier and convenient! I can even utilise the Live View on my smartphone, which in turn can be like a spy cam #laughbisu. Will share more on this in a later post. Again, I want to emphasize on LCD monitor which can be turned into mirror display and with the touch selfie screen, selfie made easier. Don’t need to click on the shutter, just touch shutter on the screen to get the shot done. There are so much more to talk about the new PEN Lite and I shall save them in the next posts.
