One of the must have and not to be missed when visiting Penang is Char Koay Teow. If you follow me on Instagram and have read my previous posts, I’ve never missed out a good plate of CKT whenever I drop by Penang.
This time round, we went to try Ah Leng CKT as Ken has been talking about it. The best and most fragrant among all CKT in Penang. In other words, the father of all CKT on the island. With so much good words about Ah Leng CKT, we decided to hunt for it since we were in Penang.
For many, they would have thought of Ah Leng CKT, the one located at Khoon Hiang Cafe along Jalan Dato Keramat, which we first had during the Hennessy X.O food expedition last time round. That’s actually manned by Ah Leng’s son. The one Ken mentioned is located along Lorong Zoo 7 which is operated by Ah Leng himself.
Location map and address is at the end of this post.
We had a plate of Ah Leng CKT with duck egg each and later regretted that we should have ordered one with duck egg and one with chicken egg so that we could taste the difference. Because this is the first time I tried CKT with fresh duck egg, so, I couldn’t tell the difference only after I’ve finished. Once done eating, you will get this fishy duck egg smell on your lips. Then, only you know that, “yes, that’s duck egg alright.”
Overall, the CKT is really good and comes with 3 huge fresh prawns. I find it a little wet though. Coming back we told Ken about our Ah Leng CKT (the papa) experience and he said that we order salah (wrongly) already. Should have asked for chicken egg and request for extra dry, for that extra wok hei. Deng.
It’s ok, there’s always a next time
