1977 新怡保鸡饭店 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice @ Mid Valley Megamall

1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice (9)

“The Ipoh Chicken Rice (the one with many outlets in KL) is by far the closest taste with the ones you get in Ipoh.” A remark I got when I asked for the best chicken rice in town. Reluctant to just eat the words I heard, I head over to the nearest 1977 新怡保鸡饭店 Ipoh Chicken Rice outlet I could get to and there was an outlet in Mid Valley Megamall.

I browsed through the Internet in search for food reviews of the outlet and a few reviews directed the shop location to be ”opposite Starbucks, same row as RHB Bank”. So, without checking on the mall’s directory, my dinner companion and I headed over straight to the boulevard in search for the chicken rice shop. To my dismay, we couldn’t find the shop. I was pretty sure I followed the directions correctly. The first thing that came into my mind was, “WHAT THE HECK?! Chap lap jor ahhhh (close shop already)???”

Not giving up, I searched up to the mall’s directory and HOORAY! The shop is actually inside the mall. =..=|||

Mid Valley’s 1977 新怡保鸡饭店 New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice outlet used to be at the boulevard and has relocated to the Third Floor of the mall. It is at the same floor as Mid Valley’s Exhibition Hall, just beside the Feng Shui shop. Right opposite Connect. There’s a new MOCHI kiosk in front of it. Don’t know how to be more exact, anyway, just take the escalator from the Centre Court all the way up to the third floor and if you still miss it, you’re more GeoBlinded than me. *hiakhiakhiak*

Once seated we were presented with their menu. There were ala carte and bento set menu. Ala carte dishes were priced from RM5 for small portion while the drinks were pricey and starts from RM3. Chicken on the other hand were priced from RM11 (quarter bird) and up to RM42 for a whole bird. The noodles (from RM10.80) and bento set (from RM13.80) were worthwhile and comes with a drink.

Since it was my first time here, I wanted have their best signature dishes. While deciding on what to have, the waitress was very patient and non-stoppingly recommending dishes to try and what the heck, we should have come in a big group. I wanted to try everything there is on the menu! I like how she started off asking if we wanted something in a set or from the ala carte menu and started suggesting what’s good to have when dining for 2 persons. Then, she started throwing in words like “today’s char siew (honey bbq pork) is very beautiful, half fat half lean”. WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO ME?! Ended up ordering more than 2 persons could eat, well that’s what we first thought..

Once we were done with our order, we were immediately served with their chicken rice chili sauce and cutleries. While waiting for our food, I took the spoon and have a taste of the chili sauce. Gosh! It was good, but not spicy enough. Love the lime tangy end.

Organic Kampung Chicken 招牌有䴼文昌菜園雞(Quarter lower part) @ RM22

Since this is a Chicken Rice shop, I was adamant to have CHICKEN and we were recommended with the Organic Kampung Chicken as it is less fat and more succulent than the ordinary chicken. It does seem to have less fat and the meat is tender, juicy and succulent. It would have been great if there’s a dash or two of rice wine over the chicken. Hehehehe

I rarely take chicken skin because it is fattening (as if taking pork belly is any better *rolls eyes at self*) but I just couldn’t help but trying the chicken skin here and my goodness! They were so smooth and silky. Best of all, there were not much fat like the ordinary chicken. I’d like to think that I’m having my collagen dosage. Heeeeee

Honey BBQ Pork 炭燒蜜汁叉憢 & Roasted Pork 炭憢脆皮憢肉 (Regular) @ RM14

When the waitress mentioned about the Char Siew earlier, and at that moment I was staring at the Siu Yok (crispy pork). Unsure which to order, she suggested that we could try both the Siu Yok and Char Siew by ordering a regular platter with a mix of both. So much win!

1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice (6)

There are 7 pieces of Siu Yok and approximately 9 decent slices of Char Siew. Both were yummy but I enjoy the Char Siew more. The Siu Yok has got really thin crispy skin and too much lean meat if you ask me. So, it was rather dry and chewy. The Char Siew on the other hand was sweet, juicy, fatty and tender. Just like how a perfect Char Siew should be.

Pork Ball (4 pieces) 另片豬肉丸 @ RM5

Was not so anticipated to order the Pork Balls.. But looking at the Pork Balls on the menu, it stared right back at me and shouted, “EAT ME EAT ME!” Since the small bowl of pork ball comes with 4, I’m sure we could wallop them easily.

1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice (14)

The Pork Ball was actually pretty good. Packed with fresh pork, minced dried cuttlefish and seasoned with the family’s secret ingredients. The soup is flavourful and the pork balls were really bouncy.

Ipoh Bean Sprouts 怡保芽菜 (Small) @ RM5

What’s the point of eating in a Nga Choy shop if you don’t order their Nga Choy (bean sprouts). The Ipoh Bean Sprouts were rather huge and fat but tasted pretty bland. So, I added lots of chili and eat it with the chicken. Just so yummy. Crunchy bean sprouts and succulent chicken. Bliss ahhh

Cooling Herbal Tea 清熱涼茶 @ RM3.50

Overall, the total damage came up to RM62 for two. That’s rather pricey for a chicken rice meal, but not to mention that we had porkie goodness to go along the traditional Ipoh chicken rice. I’d love to come back again to try their other dishes to go along with the chicken rice. Perhaps some lala (clams) or fish next round.
